Fox is reporting the University of South Florida is taking action to restrict access to their campus:
TAMPA - New security plans are in place at the University of South Florida's Tampa campus. Gates will go up at some of the school's 17 entrances by this fall.
Right now, all of those entrances are completely open, making the campus easily accessible to anyone. Once the gates are in place, they will be locked from midnight to 6 a.m. USF is still deciding which entrances will have the gates.
Bruce Benson, interim assistance vice president for the office of public safety, says they are trying to keep criminals out.
"We don't want the campus to be a comfortable place for outside people who might have criminal intent," he said.
"Just to restrict a little bit some of the outside people cruising campus, maybe with weapons or drugs in their cars," Benson added.
University officials say about 60 percent of campus crime is committed by people not affiliated with the school. According to USF, the number one campus crime is theft and the second is burglary.
Students support the idea.
"It would be a really good safety precaution, because so many people live on campus. And it's a commuter campus. A lot of people walk around all the time at night," said sophomore Kimberly Young.
USF may also install warning sirens and loud speakers on campus for emergencies.
